Less than a week after Jada Pinkett Smith first shook the internet by revealing that she and Will Smith have been secretly separated for seven years (among other bombshell revelations), the actor has finally spoken out — in more ways than one.

According to The New York Times, Smith first replied to his wife’s confessions — which she shared while making the promotional rounds ahead of her memoir Worthy’s Oct. 16 release — by sending the publication an email, in which he stated that Jada’s words “kind of woke [him] up.”

He added that his wife was more “resilient, clever and compassionate than [he’d] understood,” and explained that the length of their relationship made him less aware of her struggles. “When you’ve been with someone for more than half of your life, a sort of emotional blindness sets in,” Smith wrote. “And you can all too easily lose your sensitivity to their hidden nuances and subtle beauties.”

In addition to responding to Jada’s memoir directly through the Times, Smith also shared a cheeky, less direct response with his millions of Instagram followers.

On Sunday, the actor returned to the social platform for the first time since Pinkett Smith publicly opened up about their marriage by sharing a video of him sleeping on a boat while ringtones and text notifications pinged in the background.

"Fun fact about me: I can take a nap almost anywhere,” a voiceover said in the clip before Smith woke up and smiled while shaking his head at the camera. He further clarified that he’s not worried about the buzz by captioning the post, “Notifications off :)”

Naturally, Jada shared her thoughts on his lighthearted response by commenting two laughing emojis.

Pinkett Smith’s memoir, Worthy, will be available everywhere Oct. 17.
