David Leland, the esteemed British director and actor, has passed away at the age of 82, as confirmed by his longstanding agency, Casarotto Ramsay & Associates.
Leland’s career, which spanned over five decades, embraced theater, film, and television. He left an indelible mark on the industry, known for his diverse contributions and notable works. Leland breathed his last on Christmas Eve, surrounded by his family.
One of his notable achievements was writing two films centered around British suburban madam Cynthia Payne. “Personal Services” in 1987 earned Leland a BAFTA nomination, while “Wish You Were Here” became a hit at the Cannes Film Festival. The latter secured Leland the BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay and the FIPRESCI prize at Cannes, cementing his reputation as a gifted storyteller.
In addition to his prowess in film, Leland served as co-showrunner for the Showtime series “The Borgias.” His influence extended beyond the screen, as he played a pivotal role in giving Pierce Brosnan his inaugural stage opportunity in the British premiere of Tennessee Williams’ “The Red Devil Battery Sign” at The Round House.
