Jay-Z and Beyonce have just snagged one of the greatest architectural masterpieces in the country ... a 30,000 square foot home in the prime area of Malibu ... and they paid a King's ransom.

Real estate sources tell TMZ ... the couple paid $200 million for the property, making it the most expensive home ever sold in the entire state of California ... eclipsing the previous record of $177 million. It's also the second most expensive real estate deal in the country -- the top being $238 million for an NYC apartment.

by Anonymousreply 49May 20, 2023 12:37 AM

About the only good thing to say is that it won't burn in a fire. That's probably why the former art collector owner built it out of concrete.

by Anonymousreply 51May 20, 2023 12:37 AM

The house was built by The Bells funded by an ill-legal operation which they inisheeated in the Hawaii courts with a corrupt Japanese judge to steal my righfilly owned propertees and funds. So, I should actually own this propertyy. My beautiful floor to ceiling portraitss would look great there.

by Anonymousreply 57May 20, 2023 12:56 AM

I like it. It's grand and spacious, but understated and minimal (at least on the outside). What else would you expect from EIGHT acres of prime waterfront real estate property in Malibu? $200M seems accurate. Jay-Z is a billionaire and they're living on Billionaire's Row. If they paid $200M for some gaudy, ostentatious, over-designed, Trump-esque mansion you'd brand them tasteless, nouveau riche swine anyway. DL is too old and white to carve out any love for Beyonce.

by Anonymousreply 58May 20, 2023 1:00 AM

The article says it took 15 years to construct. Can you imagine what $200 million would build for low cost housing? What a mark they’d make on society if they built apartments for the elderly, rehabbed an LA building for homeless vets, underwrite a drug rehab center for downtown LA and built rentals for minimum wage families.

My hero's are the people that slog the long hours and dogged persistence of a long working life. The shit they put up with everyday is a miracle. They do this while receiving a minimum. These Celeb Strawberries Lay around and basically jack off in front of a camera, millions just pour into to their Accounts. I know i guess this is = to the USA, but it is really sickening to watch and I'm becoming increasing disgusted by it. Sports stars too. they bounce a ball or drive a car in some stupid race. They just get millions for this useless wasteful activity that cause people to buy shit they don't need. My Family are these people. The house is a horror lets turn it into a homeless care center, fuck Malibu.

by Anonymousreply 69May 20, 2023 1:56 AM

R49 is right, it is all concrete.... thats part of why it is so fugly. It could be painted white not that that would improve it much

R58 I neither know nor care who Beyonce or this JayZ person is. Its a butt ugly house

R69 couldnt agree more. Although I dont know if I'd want to inflict this monstrosity on the homeless either.

I'd want to fill it up with rock/dirt fill and place a genuinely beautiful home on top of the resulting platform. At least all that concrete is good for that as it would give good structural rigidity

by Anonymousreply 70May 20, 2023 2:02 AM

[R49]is right, it is all concrete.... thats part of why it is so fugly. It could be painted white not that that would improve it much

Why talk about things you don't know? One doesn't paint concrete. One adds a tint to the concrete before pouring as the builders did in this construction. A white tint.

The best we can do is to not give them any attention. They have published this to a) make sure that people will talk about them and b) broadcast to fellow celebrities that they are at the top of the pecking order, and possibly aspire to climb to a higher stratum.

Nonetheless, it's a rather tacky and vulgar thing to do. They are behaving like the trashy nouveau riches that they are.

R80 most of us here hate this kind of architecture and dont care who owns it. Some of us may not even know who Beyonce is. I have a vague inkling myself, but if she bought something beautiful like an old Victorian place I'd be praising it (and her taste)

by Anonymousreply 97May 20, 2023 3:17 AM

R97, the house was probably constructed of concrete to withstand wildfires. An old Victorian in that area would be torched and gone in an instant. It's not my cup of tea but then I don't have to live in it.

by Anonymousreply 98May 20, 2023 4:01 AM

Is this anywhere near Barbra’s ersatz New England farmstead?

by Anonymousreply 99May 20, 2023 4:17 AM

[quote]the house was probably constructed of concrete to withstand wildfires.

It was designed by Tadao Ando, an architect, who had been world famous for most of 30 years when he began work on the project in 1999/2000 -- famous for designing modern buildings in concrete, and almost without exception in concrete that celebrates its essential concreteness. The fireproof quality of concrete may have been a factor in the patron's mind, but hiring one of the most famous architects in the world with a very specific aesthetic, and letting him fuck around with the design for 15 years, the client definitely wanted a big concrete box with some glass for the look.

Good luck selling that behemoth when they can’t afford it any more.

You might as well buy Antarctica and then freak out when no one can afford to buy it from you later, when you’re continent-poor. That’s not an investment, it’s an unsustainable bottomless pit of expense.

[quote]the house was probably constructed of concrete to withstand wildfires. An old Victorian in that area would be torched and gone in an instant. It's not my cup of tea but then I don't have to live in it.

R98 Thats a very good point, hadnt thought of that. That said, it is quite possible to build in that style in concrete, and it was done back in the day. The house linked was built back in 1873, although admittedly it was an uncommon material for homes back then - From a Guardian article;

[quote]Built in 1873, the house's walls are not made of the traditional brick, but pre-cast concrete. It is one of a tiny number of survivors from a brief period when a handful of Victorian builders became convinced that concrete was the future of housing. It is also believed to be the only remaining property built by Charles Drake, the era's most prolific and enthusiastic proponent of concrete homes.

So it is possible to build something charming and in concrete

I like it even though the choice of colours is a little too safe, with all the beiges, browns and grays. I wonder how much it costs to air condition such a big place. I hope the edge of the property is well protected from water erosion.

by Anonymousreply 149May 21, 2023 6:50 AM

I guess the address is 27712 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu.

by Anonymousreply 150May 21, 2023 6:56 AM

That house has Tom Ford's finger prints all over it. The architect that did this did one of Tom Ford's house? It reminds me of his ranch in Santa Fe.As soon as I saw the exterior, I thought of him. His kid goes to school with her kids and I know he has a lot of influence over Jay-Z's style.

They brought this house from the Bell family. Why they do not want it now, who knows? The massive compound has a secure private museum. It has the vibe of a Modern Art Museum.

by Anonymousreply 158May 21, 2023 8:09 AM

Conspicuous consumption. I think it's immoral to keep hundreds of millions dollars that no one and their children/grandchildren will ever need while millions of people live in the breadline, are homeless or animals suffer and need help etc, the list goes on.

Not saying rich people shouldn't enjoy their wealth and have nice things but don't hoard your money and waste it on $200m property that looks like shit

by Anonymousreply 168May 21, 2023 10:09 AM

We need to tax this, absolutely. We need to have a tax code that expands and protects the middle class. We need make sure this money is locked up into entitlement programs for the American People (medical care, robust pensions and education), so the corrupt politicians and their donors cannot touch it.

by Anonymousreply 169May 21, 2023 11:05 AM

R167, if you look through the gallery of photos of the interior in OP's link, there is a recording studio in there.

by Anonymousreply 172May 21, 2023 2:21 PM

We were saying it looks like a nursing home in the aerials. Some of the interior sightlines make good use of the views, but . . . this is like 8% of their net worth? Are we about to have a big enough underclass that they can staff/run it feasibly? I know Beyonce watched Downton Abbey.

by Anonymousreply 173May 21, 2023 2:25 PM

It is a cross between a 1980's shopping mall and a modern museum out of Beetlejuice. The nuisance shit of this architect makes it less appealing.

[quote] It sold for $14.5 million in 2003 and now sold for $200 million in May 2023! That's one hell of a mark up.

I am wondering if this was just for the land. There was a rare promontory of flat land in Malibu that they had been trying to sell for some time. 14.M to 200M is a massive jump. Also, I would be shocked of there house was on PCH, b/c that's all waterfront. They are probably in gated Serra Retreat and way up.

by Anonymousreply 175May 21, 2023 2:34 PM

I'll say it again, but why the fuck do people need all that space? I know. BIllionaires do what they want because they can. But why? I get it. You want to have a nice big house. But this is just ridiculous. Maybe it's because I really don't like them as a couple. But I felt the same way about the Gates family back before they divorced. Now I know nothing about him, but Dr. Dre is loaded. Billionaire. George Clooney is loaded Billionaire. But the ostentatious monstrosity here is just offensive. He's no better than a Kardashian or Kanye.

by Anonymousreply 176May 21, 2023 2:38 PM

I'm curious if Chris Cortozzo was the agent. He was Herb Ritz's young, model widower (at the time) before he passed and is the king of Malibu real estate. The commission is typically 2.5 but on a house like this, let's say they negotiated a reduced commission of 2.0% on a 85% split with the agency. The agent, whoever they are, made 3.4 MILLION dollars on this sale.

by Anonymousreply 177May 21, 2023 2:39 PM

Why listen to a lawyer who is getting paid by white supremist? I mean, we can all watch the video. That scumbag lawyer is lying too.

by Anonymousreply 178May 21, 2023 2:43 PM

No, no, R172. The house is definitely at 27712 Pacific Coast Highway, as mentioned in the link at R151. If you type the address into google maps and look at the satellite view, it is their house. The house is also shown in the link at R101, along with its address.

by Anonymousreply 179May 21, 2023 2:48 PM

You ar right, R172. I just looked at the map. They are out further north past the colony where Cher and Baby live which has those massive pieces of cliff side land. I was thinking of everything before Paradise Cove where the houses are literally on right on PCH on one side and the beach on the other.

by Anonymousreply 180May 21, 2023 2:52 PM

You're probably right, R175. The $14 million was probably for the land. After the previous owner hired starchitect Tadao Ando to design the house and the owner took 15 years to build the new house, according to the TMZ article, there was a tremendous jump in price.

by Anonymousreply 193May 21, 2023 5:27 PM

Gaga’s, Cher’s and Barbra’s houses are all cheaply constructed, have no design other than to be large and to give in to the clients poor taste in housing, and none of them have access to the water directly.

Beyoncé’s house is architecture. That’s the difference. Expensive construction (not just in the finishes). Thoughtful design that concerns each part of the building (not just finishes). And she has direct beach access.

by Anonymousreply 194May 21, 2023 6:12 PM

I hate the argument at r69. Entertainers provide their talents to millions of people who pay them for their services. A nurse or teacher providers services to 3,000 people in their career. Duh.

by Anonymousreply 195May 21, 2023 6:15 PM

I was not that impressed with Gaga's house. It's fine and the there is some land, but it's noting to gaga about. I like Bab's cliff view and I have driven passed Cher's house so many times and I like that one as well. Beyonce has the most average, usable land, and architecture so I have to go with that one though I think I would be fine w/ Cher's house

by Anonymousreply 196May 21, 2023 6:18 PM

by Anonymousreply 204May 21, 2023 7:31 PM

R95 Yes,Just as much as patents and copywriter deliver profits to artists industry protects formulas and processes under these protections. Thereby making many thing more costly than they would otherwise be.Even music phrases and Microbes are protected to deliver profits to individuals. Entertainers provide for the camera or microphone the duplicating powers of the media do the rest. A big part of corporatism is the protection of these rights and getting them enforced. China and Mexico let these properties get used without getting royalties for the owners. It is but one of the reasons we are supposed to hate them. In fact lead was put in gasoline for at least 50 years because the non polluting alternatives could not be protected under patent laws. We were then bathed the planet in a cloud of lead vapor for 50 years but as this didn't benefit us. Only the patent holders got money. The rest of were poisined. As it doesn't benefit us to have these guys have a mansion in Malibu. Duh,Duh

by Anonymousreply 213May 21, 2023 9:18 PM

I like Gaga's because it's a bit out of the way. More privacy.

Being on the beach in Malibu isn't like being on the beach in, say, Hawaii. It's too cold most of the year for swimming and I much prefer hiking, trails, horses, etc.

I guess I prefer Gaga's land over the others.

As far as the houses themselves? Eh. They're all big and ostentatious and way more brick than I'd ever want.

by Anonymousreply 244May 22, 2023 3:23 PM

I hate houses like that. I'd much rather buy a lot of land and live in a modest house on a lake than pay that sort of money for a house I'm not a fan of - though I get that the type of thing I'd want isn't even an option in LA.

The real estate market in LA is insane though - you see these multi-million pound houses on the likes of Selling Sunset and they go on about the incredible views - but it's just views of other people's houses (and they can see yours too) and loads of concrete. Pass.

by Anonymousreply 245May 22, 2023 3:42 PM

Listen, 20 years from now, Anything in the north close to fresh water is going to be worth a fortune. So look to the Great Lakes. Upstate NY, Michigan Wisconsin, Illinois, etc. Because California will be on fire.

by Anonymousreply 246May 22, 2023 3:57 PM

R245 selling sunset and the housing on the sunset strip isn't really indicative of LA housing stock generally. That type of housing only really exists over there, and then further west along the hills towards the ocean in some parts. There are a lot of very charming single family homes in the hills around Echo Park / Silverlake / Los Feliz / Mount Washington that all have nice views but also a lot of private outdoor space (great for sex parties ;) ) and also all of the canyons have a lot of cool ranchy / mediterranean / mid century places that also have both. Once you get off the flats in LA anywhere east you see a lot of very jumbled together housing styles, this is particular to the area (it doesn't (and LA generally doesn't) have any of the estate type planning familiar to europeans with 200 of the same building in a row) which is cool and unique. It's worth checking out.

by Anonymousreply 247May 22, 2023 4:50 PM

It's kind of sad for this King and Queen that Kanye and Kim K each already have their Tadao Ando houses, not to mention Tom Ford. Doesn't seem very cutting edge. And they have overpaid. Or the price is bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 248May 22, 2023 6:28 PM

I would safely bet that most rock stars, musicians, performers, celebrities, etc. usually overpay for their real estate. It just seems like they make so much money so quickly they just don't manage it well. Now some do. But many do not. Jay Z has always thought of himself as a business man. But I hope he also has sound business advisors.

It’s sleek and modern at least. Some of these ultra rich celebrities pay so many millions for custom compounds and they’re just oversized and ugly. Tom and Gisele had an ugly custom built property iirc. The only drawback is I’d think you’ll need a golf cart to get around JayZ and Beyoncé’s place.

Bold and Beautiful shot some episodes on the property, I believe. I’m guessing they filmed outdoors on the grounds as opposed to inside the home.
